EQUALISE UG&PG SEATS; SAVE DOCTOR,SAVE PATIENT.
The medical field today is facing a challenging time. At one end are millions of patients(mostly from rural areas) who are not getting minimum healthcare. On the other end there are budding doctors, who despite of working hard at the cost of all the fun they might have had at their age,are not happy with their career.
The gangotri of all these problems is the healthcare policy and infrastructure we have.In the light of making rural service compulsary, the medical student after passing MBBS enters a dilemma. Whether he should go to village to serve rural people,as a part of the social responsibility he is entitled to by studying UG in govt. funded institution. Or prepare for a PG entrance exams,to get a MD/MS degree, without which his glorious academic track record from schooldays becomes a flop show.Doing both is practically difficult looking at the competition PG entrance exams carries. The only solution out of it is equalising UG and PG seats.India has around 45000 UG seats.but only 12000 PG seats. But in developed countries like US,there are 19000 UG seats while 32000 PG and Fellowship seats. This means in india, around 30000 doctors every year have to settle without becoming specialists. They when compared to their counterparts from other fields with respect to age and intelligence are kept at a disadvantaged position. This makes career in medicine a dull looking one.If this coninues, days are not far, when bright students hesitate to enter medicine field. This in turn affects healthcare delivery by compromising the competence of our doctors. The high competition at entrance exams also plays significant role in reducing the clinical competence of doctors. They have to spend their MBBS days mugging useless facts, and understanding abstract theories, which have minimal or zero relevance to clinical practice.Otherwise they would have spent it with patients in learning really important knowlege, clinical and communication skills.
Equalising seats means assuring students of their secure future. This makes them acquire art of healing during their study and serve rural areas afterwards without having to worry much about their prospects of getting a PG seat.
But this has its own problems. The Quality of PG education may come down,if there is mere increase in seats without corresponding increase in infrastructure. Therefore we should adopt right kind of policy aimed at proportionately increasing no.of beds and other teaching resources. This will ensure maintainace of adequate quality.
The irregularities in admissions to PG courses is well known. This should be tackled with centralised transparent admission process.
In the era of evergrowing medical knowledge, need of specialists to provide rationale and comprehensive care is obvious. Therefore equalising UG and PG seats is need of the hour to prevent future shortage of specialist doctors in India. | ||
